At standalone ATMs in tourist areas (especially those not attached to bank branches), a friendly person approaches when they see you struggling with the machine — perhaps the screen is in Thai, or you are confused by the DCC option. They offer to 'help' by pressing buttons for you. While doing so, they observe your PIN, may swap your card with a dummy, or use a moment of distraction to skim your card details. By the time you realize something is wrong, they have disappeared. This is more common at night and at isolated ATMs. Some scammers also use shoulder-surfing (watching from behind) without directly interacting.
