On sidewalks and in markets, a small group gathers around someone running a shell game (three cups and a ball), a card game, or a simple gambling setup. 'Bystanders' (actually accomplices) win money easily, encouraging you to play. You may win the first small bet, building confidence. When you increase your bet, you lose. The game is rigged — the operator and the entire crowd are working together. If you win accidentally, they may claim you did not follow the rules or distract you while an accomplice picks your pocket. This scam operates in Bangkok, Pattaya, and occasionally at larger markets.
